Why does Instagram crop my photo strangely?
If you upload a photo at a ratio Instagram does not expect, its own automatic crop decides what to keep, which can cut off heads or important detail. Resizing to one of these exact presets first means you choose the framing instead of leaving it to Instagram's own algorithm.
Should I keep my subject centred for the profile picture?
Yes. Instagram displays every profile picture inside a circle, cutting off the corners of whatever square image you upload, so a face or logo sitting near a corner risks being clipped. Keeping the subject centred in the 320 x 320 preset here means it stays safely inside the circle Instagram will crop it to.
Landscape or portrait, which fits better in the Instagram feed?
Instagram's feed favours taller images: a portrait post at 1080 x 1350 takes up noticeably more vertical space when someone scrolls past it than a square or landscape post does, which is why many accounts default to portrait for ordinary feed posts and save landscape for photos that genuinely need the wider frame, such as a panorama or a screenshot.
