Compress PDF
Make a PDF smaller in one of three ways and see the size before and after. The lossless cleanup keeps every page as it is, which often saves little. Balanced saves the pictures it can make smaller again at a lower quality and keeps the text and links. The strong mode turns each page into a JPG picture, which can shrink a scan a lot but leaves text you cannot select. Nothing is uploaded, with no sign up and no watermark.

Your files never leave your device
One PDF file, up to 100 megabytesLimits: One PDF of up to 100 MB and 500 pages. The strong mode draws each page as a picture of up to 16.8 megapixels, in a PDF of up to 150 MB. Larger input is refused with a message.

How to use the Compress PDF
- Drop the PDF you want smaller on the box above, or click the box to pick it.
- Keep Lossless cleanup, or choose Balanced or Strong.
- For Balanced or Strong, pick a resolution and quality.
- Choose Compress PDF and compare the size before and after.
- Download the smaller file, or keep your original if it is not smaller.
Worked example
Load the example to see a cleanup without a file of your own. The tool writes a three page A4 draft in this tab the way some simple tools write files: its drawing instructions are not compressed, and the drawings of an older version of each page are still inside although no page uses them. The setting stays at Lossless cleanup. Choose Compress PDF and the result reads:
example-draft.pdf: 3 pages, A4, text in Times Lossless cleanup
- Original size
- 11.9 KB (12,208 bytes)
- New size
- 2.12 KB (2,171 bytes)
- Change
- Saved 82%
How to read the results
- What the compression does
- Before you start, the plan says what the chosen mode keeps and loses, for Balanced the resolution limit and quality, and for the strong mode, the size in pixels of the picture each run of pages becomes.
- Original size and New size
- The size of your file and of the result, rounded and then in exact bytes.
- Change
- Saved and a percentage when the result is smaller; Larger by and a percentage, or No change, when it is not. Only a smaller result is offered as the file to download; otherwise the button says Download anyway.
How this tool works and its limitations
The page loads no PDF code until a file is added. Adding one downloads pdf-lib, an open source PDF library, with a progress bar, and runs it in a background worker, which checks the %PDF- marker in the first 1,024 bytes, whether the file opens without a password, and the size and rotation of every page. The lossless cleanup runs in that worker.
Balanced lists the pictures in the file in that worker, which hands them to this tab one at a time. The browser decodes each one, scales it down when it exceeds the resolution limit (a picture with a mask keeps its size), saves it again as a JPG and hands it back, and the worker replaces the picture only if the new one is at least 10 percent smaller. Then it writes the file. Balanced does not need pdf.js.
The strong mode also downloads pdf.js, Mozilla's open source PDF reader. It draws one page at a time in this tab, the browser saves each drawing as a JPG and the canvas is emptied, and the worker places each JPG as it is on a page of the same size, then saves the new file. Both libraries and their licenses are listed on the open source licenses page.
- Three modes: a lossless cleanup with small savings on most files, Balanced, which saves again the pictures it can make smaller, at a lower quality, and keeps the text, and a strong mode that turns every page into a compressed JPG picture, which makes the text unselectable and unsearchable and stops links and form fields from working.
- The cleanup does not touch pictures, so a file that is mostly photos or scans saves little or nothing in that mode.
- Balanced saves pictures again as JPG at the quality you choose, which loses detail that cannot be brought back, so keep your original. A picture is replaced only when the new one is at least 10 percent smaller; pictures under 20 KB, and pictures with a side under 64 pixels, are left alone, and a file with no picture Balanced can make smaller comes out at the size of the lossless cleanup.
- Balanced handles only 8 bit gray and RGB pictures stored as JPEG or Flate (zip compressed). Black and white scans (such as CCITT or JBIG2), JPEG 2000, CMYK and palette (indexed) pictures, stencil masks, pictures with a color key and pictures with a color profile other than an RGB or gray one are kept as they are.
- Balanced measures the resolution limit against the longest page side of the file, so a picture is not scaled down because it is drawn small on a page; only a picture with more pixels than the limit allows gets fewer. A photo that the page crops can end up below the chosen resolution, because the limit is measured against the longest page side, not against the part of the picture you see. A picture with a transparency mask keeps its pixel size. A picture with an RGB color profile keeps that profile; a gray picture, with or without a color profile, becomes an RGB picture when it is replaced.
- Balanced leaves text, links, bookmarks, document scripts and attached files as the file has them, and form fields keep working; a picture used inside the look of a form field or a note can be saved again like any other.
- A result that is not smaller than your file is never presented as an improvement: the page says by how much it is larger and suggests keeping the original.
- Any change to a digitally signed file breaks its signature, in every mode.
- The lossless cleanup keeps document scripts, links that open other files or programs, and attached files as the file has them; the strong mode leaves all of them out.
- A file with a drawing that unpacks to more than 64 MB is refused by the strong mode, because drawing it could fill the memory of the browser tab; the lossless cleanup and Balanced still work on it.
- One PDF of up to 100 MB and 500 pages per job; in the strong mode each page picture holds at most 16.8 megapixels and the new PDF at most 150 MB.
Features
- A cleanup that changes how the file is stored, never how a page looks.
- Balanced, which saves each picture it can make smaller again, at a quality you choose.
- The original size, the new size and the change, with any growth shown as growth.
- Free for every file you have, with no account, no daily limit and no watermark.
Three modes, and what each one costs
The lossless cleanup leaves out objects nothing uses and packs the file's index; every page draws as before. Balanced also saves each picture it can make smaller again as a JPG; the cost is picture detail that cannot be brought back. The strong mode draws each page as a JPG picture, which is where scans shrink most, and why text can no longer be selected or searched.
Measured with Imagenati: one sample PDF at each level
Measured here in Chrome 157.0.8103.38 on November 8, 2026, each level at its default settings. The test file is generated, not a real document: two Letter pages, each with one generated picture (a scene of sky, sun and hills, saved as a JPG of 2200 by 1650 or 2000 by 1500 pixels) and two lines of real text on page 1, 1,571,021 bytes. Other browsers and real documents can differ. The cleanup saved nothing, Balanced saved 83 percent with the text still selectable, and Strong saved 90 percent without it.
| Level and settings | Pages | Size before (bytes) | Size after (bytes) | Change shown by the tool | Text selectable afterward |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lossless cleanup | 2 | 1,571,021 | 1,571,026 | Larger by under 1 percent | Yes |
| Balanced, 150 DPI limit and quality 75 | 2 | 1,571,021 | 269,908 | Saved 83 percent | Yes |
| Strong, 150 DPI and quality 70 | 2 | 1,571,021 | 156,147 | Saved 90 percent | No |
Why many PDFs hardly shrink
Most of a typical PDF is pictures and fonts, which are compressed already, so a cleanup has little to remove. In our tests a 40 page text PDF saved by macOS went from 86.0 KB to 80.0 KB, and an eight page photo PDF saved by Apple's PDF framework from 984 KB to 983 KB.
When Balanced is the right choice
Choose Balanced when pictures make the file large and you still need its text: a report with photos, or color scans saved as JPEG. It does little for a mostly text file, and nothing for pictures it cannot read, such as black and white scans.
When the strong mode is worth it
Turning pages into pictures pays off for scans, which are pictures already, often stored at a higher resolution than reading needs. In our test in Chrome, a 20 page scanned style file of 49.7 MB, scanned at 300 DPI, came to 5.22 MB at 150 DPI and quality 70. Text goes the other way: the strong mode made the 40 page macOS text PDF 16.0 MB.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my PDF get?
It depends on what is inside, so the tool measures it. Photos can shrink a lot in Balanced and scans in the strong mode; text often shrinks little or not at all.
Will I still be able to select and search the text?
After the cleanup or Balanced, yes. After the strong mode, no: each page is a picture, so its text cannot be selected, searched or copied.
Does Balanced lower the quality of my pictures?
Yes. It saves each picture it can make smaller again as a JPG, which loses detail that cannot be brought back. Keep your original.
Is my file sent to a server to be compressed?
No. Your browser reads the file and open source libraries in this tab rebuild it, so the file and its result stay on your device.
Why is the compressed file larger than my original?
A picture of a page of text can take more room than the text, and a compact file can come out a few bytes larger. The result is labeled larger: keep your original.
What happens to form fields, links and bookmarks?
The cleanup and Balanced keep them working. The strong mode keeps only what a page shows: links stop working, and bookmarks and document scripts are left out.
Can I compress a password protected PDF?
No. A file that needs a password to open is refused, and so is one with an owner password.
