How to use the Favicon Generator

  1. Upload an image, or switch to text and type a letter or emoji.
  2. Choose a shape, padding and background colour.
  3. Type your site's name, then download the ZIP and copy the link tags into your site.

Features

  • Builds favicon.ico plus every PNG size current browsers request.
  • Text mode turns one or two letters or an emoji into a mark.
  • Live preview at every generated size as you adjust shape, padding and colour.
  • Copy ready link tags for your site's head.

What is in the favicon ZIP?

The download includes favicon.ico at 16, 32 and 48 pixels, separate 16x16 and 32x32 PNG files, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon on a solid background, 192 and 512 pixel PNGs for Android home screens, and a site.webmanifest file that ties them together.

Why does a site need so many different favicon sizes?

Every place a favicon appears asks for a different size: a browser tab uses a tiny 16 or 32 pixel icon, an iPhone home screen shortcut uses the 180 pixel Apple touch icon, and an Android home screen or a progressive web app install uses the larger 192 and 512 pixel versions listed in the web manifest. Generating all of them together, rather than one at a time, means every surface gets a correctly sized icon instead of a browser stretching one image to fit several different uses.

Text mode or image mode, which should you use?

Image mode suits a site that already has a logo or a mark simple enough to read at 16 pixels; anything with fine detail or several colours tends to blur into an unreadable smudge at favicon size. Text mode is the faster option for a new project: type one or two letters or an emoji, pick a background colour and shape, and get a clean, legible mark without needing a finished logo file first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a favicon without an image?

Yes, switch to text mode and type one or two characters or an emoji, then pick a colour and shape. The tool renders it as your mark.

What if my source image is not square?

The tool pads or crops it to a square before generating sizes, and warns you if the source is smaller than the largest size in the pack.

How do I add the favicon to my site?

Unzip the download, upload the files to your site, and paste the link tags shown next to the preview into your page's head section.

Why does the Apple touch icon have a solid background even if my source has transparency?

iOS ignores transparency on home screen icons and instead shows an unpredictable colour behind any transparent area, so this tool forces a solid background specifically for the 180 pixel Apple touch icon to keep it looking intentional.

What is the site.webmanifest file for?

It is a small JSON file that tells a phone browser which icons to use when someone adds your site to their home screen or installs it as an app, along with basic details like the site name and theme colour. Type your site's name in the settings panel so it ends up in this file instead of a placeholder.

Do I need to use every file in the ZIP?

The link tags provided cover the standard set most sites use. If your site does not support installing as an app, you can skip the manifest and android icons and just use favicon.ico and the Apple touch icon.
