Why does my Facebook cover look cropped on phones?
Facebook displays a wider crop on desktop than it does on a phone screen. Anything near the left or right edge on desktop can be cut off on mobile. The safe zone overlay in this tool marks the area that stays visible on both, so you can keep logos or text inside it.
What is the difference between the safe zone and the mobile cover preset?
The safe zone overlay marks the central 640 x 312 area of the full 820 x 312 desktop cover that stays visible however Facebook crops it on a given device, so you keep the desktop image but position your subject inside that marked area. The separate mobile cover preset, at 640 x 360, is for the different case of building a cover photo specifically sized for how Facebook's mobile app crops it on its own, rather than a single image meant to work everywhere.
What makes a good Facebook cover photo?
Wide, simple compositions hold up best, since the cover spans a much wider ratio than a normal photo and Facebook overlays your profile picture and name across the bottom left corner on both desktop and mobile. Keep faces, logos and any text away from that bottom left area and centred within the safe zone, and avoid small text anywhere in the image, since it becomes difficult to read once Facebook displays the cover at a reduced size on a phone.
