Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?
HEIC compresses more efficiently than JPG, so Apple made it the default to save storage space. The tradeoff is that plenty of websites, older Windows software and some printing services do not accept it. Converting once to JPG fixes that without losing noticeable quality.
Is it safe to convert personal photos this way?
Many HEIC to JPG converters upload your photo to a server first, which matters when the photo is personal: a family picture, an ID document, anything you would rather not send anywhere else. This tool decodes and re-encodes the file using your browser's own processing power, so the photo never leaves your device at any point, before, during or after the conversion.
How do you stop your iPhone saving new photos as HEIC?
Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and switch from High Efficiency to Most Compatible. New photos taken after that change save directly as JPG, avoiding the need to convert them later. This does not change any photo already saved as HEIC before you make the switch; those still need converting individually or in a batch, which is what this tool is for.

Why does this tool need to download something first?
HEIC decoding is not built into most browsers, so the first time you use this tool it loads a small decoding library, about 1 MB, once. Your browser caches it, so your next visit is instant.
Will the converted photo be rotated correctly?
Yes, the tool reads the orientation data your iPhone saved and applies it, so the JPG matches what you see in your Photos app.
Can I convert a batch of HEIC photos at once?

Does converting to JPG lose quality compared to the original HEIC?
A small amount, since JPG and HEIC are both lossy formats but compress differently. At the default quality of 90 the difference is not visible on a normal photo.
Does this work with Live Photos?
It converts the still HEIC image, not the short video portion of a Live Photo, which is stored as a separate file by iOS. The result is a normal still JPG.
Why is the HEIC decoder about 1 MB?
HEIC uses the same underlying compression as HEIF video, which needs a real decoder rather than a browser's built in image handling. That decoder only loads the first time you use this tool or HEIC to PNG, and your browser caches it after that.
