Does WebP support transparency like PNG?
Yes. WebP has full alpha channel support, so a logo or icon with a transparent background converts cleanly with no visible difference in the transparent areas, usually at a noticeably smaller file size than the original PNG.
How much smaller is WebP than PNG for the same graphic?
It varies with how much detail the graphic has, but flat icons, logos and simple illustrations often shrink by half or more, since WebP's lossless mode compresses repeated flat colour more efficiently than PNG does. A graphic with photographic elements, gradients or a lot of fine texture sees a smaller gain, and switching the quality slider to a slightly lossy setting rather than fully lossless usually closes most of the remaining gap.
Should every PNG on a website become WebP?
For icons, logos, illustrations and screenshots, generally yes, since the file size drop is close to free with no visible quality change. The one case worth keeping as PNG is a very small handful of colours meant to stay pixel exact, such as a favicon source file or an asset that will be edited further in design software, where an extra format conversion adds a step for no real benefit.
