Why does converting PNG to JPG shrink the file so much?
PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly, which is expensive for a photo with smooth gradients and lots of detail. JPG's lossy compression is built for exactly that kind of image, so photographs saved as PNG usually shrink dramatically once converted, often by 70 percent or more.
How do you know if your PNG is actually a photo, not a graphic?
A screenshot, a scanned document, a chart or a logo tends to use a small, distinct set of colours with hard edges between them, and this kind of PNG rarely benefits from converting to JPG since it was never large for the reason a photo is. A photograph, on the other hand, uses thousands of gradually shifting colours across skin tones, sky and shadow, which is exactly the kind of detail PNG stores inefficiently and JPG was designed to compress well. If you are unsure, try the conversion; a genuine photo will drop dramatically in size, while a graphic will not shrink nearly as much and is often better left as PNG or converted to WebP instead.
What background colour should you pick for the transparent areas?
Match the colour to wherever the image will sit next: white if it is going onto a plain white page or document, or a specific brand colour if the image will sit on a coloured background in a presentation or print layout. Pick a colour close to the surrounding content rather than leaving the default white unless white actually matches, since a mismatched fill colour around a transparent logo is one of the more obvious signs of a rushed conversion.
