Why convert a JPG to PNG?
PNG is the format many design and editing tools expect, and it supports layers of further lossless edits without repeated compression loss. Converting a JPG to PNG will not add detail that the JPG did not already have, but it does stop any further generation loss from repeated saving.
When does a design tool specifically require PNG?
Logo upload fields, favicon generators, print templates with a transparency layer and many icon or asset pipelines check the file extension or format before accepting an upload, and reject a JPG outright even when the actual image content would have worked fine. Converting first avoids that rejection, even though the conversion itself cannot add the transparency those tools might expect; for that you need a source image that already has a transparent background, not a JPG converted after the fact.
Is it worth converting a whole photo library from JPG to PNG?
Usually not. PNG files run several times larger than the equivalent JPG for an ordinary photo, since JPG's lossy compression is built specifically for photographic detail and PNG's lossless approach is not. Convert individual files to PNG only when a specific next step actually needs it, such as further lossless editing or a tool that will not accept JPG, rather than converting an entire library as routine.

Will converting to PNG improve the image quality?
No. It preserves exactly what the JPG contained, including any compression artefacts already in the file. PNG just stops further loss from here on.
Does the resulting PNG have transparency?
No, a JPG never has transparency data, so the PNG comes out fully opaque.
Will the PNG file be larger than the JPG?
