Why are BMP files so large?
BMP stores an uncompressed value for every single pixel, so a photo that would be a few hundred kilobytes as JPG can be tens of megabytes as BMP. Converting to JPG applies compression built for photographic detail, usually cutting the file to under a tenth of its BMP size.
Why does anything still produce BMP files today?
BMP's lack of compression makes it fast and simple to write, which is exactly why some scanners, industrial cameras, older Windows utilities and screen capture tools default to it: no compression step means no processing delay and no possible compression artefact, at the cost of a much larger file. Once that BMP needs to be shared, uploaded or emailed, the size becomes a real problem that a quick conversion to JPG solves.
Is there any downside to converting BMP straight to JPG?
Only the usual lossy compression tradeoff, and BMP was never lossless in a way worth preserving in the first place, since it stores raw pixel values rather than any kind of quality setting.
